1st grade – 3rd grade $225 per semester
In this year-long course, students will learn structure and style while writing about firefighters, police officers, rescue workers, and other community helpers! Your early elementary student will progress to writing paragraphs, stories, and simple reports. This is a great place to start an IEW journey and will be supplemented with stories, games, and activities.
Prerequisite: ability to write in complete sentences and read at a 1st-2nd grade reading level
Adventures in Writing (FULL--Waitlist Only)

3rd grade – 4th grade $225 per semester
Explore a wide variety of fascinating subjects in Adventures in Writing! In this year-long course students will write about a wide-array of topics from tornadoes to magnets, Leif Eriksson to John Muir, dolphins, and even roosters! Together students will work through IEW Units 1–7 as they learn to take notes, retell narrative stories, summarize references, write from pictures, and compose their own inventive tales. Weekly vocabulary study is also included.
Prerequisite: completion of People and Places in Our Community or ability to read at a 3rd grade reading level
Fables, Myths, and Fairy Tales (FULL--Waitlist Only)

3rd grade – 5th grade $225 per semester
Let your students’ imaginations soar while enjoying classic children’s tales and learning to write with structure and style! This year-long course will take students through a wide variety of adventures while supplying a rich foundation for imaginative and enjoyable writing. Together students will work through IEW Units 1–7 as they learn to take notes, retell narrative stories, summarize references, write from pictures, and compose their own fables, myths, and fairy tales. Weekly vocabulary study is also included.
Prerequisite: completion of Adventures in Writing/All Things Fun and Fascinating or ability to read at a 3rd-4th grade reading level
Discoveries in Writing

4th grade – 5th grade $225 per semester
Discover a wide variety of fascinating subjects in Discoveries in Writing! In this year-long course students will write about a wide-array of topics such as the Bayeux Tapestry, tsunamis, Jerusalem, and the Crusades. Together students will work through IEW Units 1–7 as they learn to take notes, retell narrative stories, summarize references, write from pictures, and compose their own inventive works. Weekly vocabulary study is also included.
Prerequisite: completion of one year of an elementary level IEW curriculum or first year IEW student in 4th or 5th grade
Wonders of Science (FULL--Waitlist Only)

4th grade – 7th grade $225 per semester
Your little scientist will be captivated reading about bugs, scientific inventions, and prominent scientists all while learning to write with structure and style! This year-long course will take students through a wide variety of science-based source texts supplying a rich foundation for imaginative and enjoyable writing. Together students will work through IEW Units 1–7 as they learn to take notes, retell narrative stories, summarize references, write from pictures, and compose their own formal essays and critiques. Weekly vocabulary study is also included.
Prerequisite: completion of at least one year of an elementary level IEW curriculum or first year IEW student in 6th or 7th grade
Ancient History-Based Writing

Discover and be amazed at the wonders of the ancient world while learning to write with structure and style! This year-long course offers writing topics that explore the ancient civilizations of Sumer, Egypt, Israel, Babylon, Greece, Rome, Asia Minor, and Asia—the people’s ideas, traditions, systems of government, feats, and wonderful skills. IEW’s structural units 1–9 are taught in order, while elements of style are introduced gradually. This course includes weekly vocabulary study and optional corresponding historical novels and literature response.
Prerequisite: completion of at least one year of an elementary level IEW curriculum or first year IEW student in 6th or 7th grade
Medieval History-Based Writing

4th grade – 7th grade $225 per semester
Knights, Vikings, kings, and famous men of the Middle Ages come to life as students learn to write with structure and style. This year-long course offers writing topics that explore Medieval history from the Anglo-Saxons to the Renaissance, from chivalrous knights to Genghis Khan. IEW’s structural units 1–9 are taught in order, while elements of style are introduced gradually. This course includes weekly vocabulary study and optional corresponding historical novels and literature response.
Prerequisite: completion of at least one year of an elementary level IEW curriculum or first year IEW student in 6th or 7th grade
U.S. History-Based Writing

6th grade – 8th grade $225 per semester
Travel back in time to early United States history! This year-long writing course allows students to delve into the excitement of explorers, battles, land expansion, famous ships, and founding fathers. IEW’s structural units 1–9 are taught in order, while elements of style are introduced gradually. This course includes weekly vocabulary study and optional corresponding historical novels and literature response.
Prerequisite: completion of at least one year of a junior high level IEW curriculum or first year IEW student in 8th grade
Modern World History-Based Writing
10-10:55am Wednesdays (LIVE online Pacific Standard Time)
6th grade – 8th grade $225 per semester
The world is at your fingertips! This year-long writing course allows students to experience world history through cultural literature and the study of famous people and events including the invention of the printing press, Age of Exploration, French Revolution, Communism around the world, Gandhi, Sherlock Holmes, and the Pied Piper. IEW’s structural units 1–9 are taught in order, while elements of style are introduced gradually. This course includes weekly vocabulary study and optional corresponding historical novels and literature response.
Prerequisite: completion of at least one year of a junior high level IEW curriculum or first year IEW student in 8th grade

7th grade – 9th grade $225 per semester*
While reading through the first three novels of The Chronicles of Narnia® (The Magician’s Nephew, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and The Horse and His Boy), this year-long class beckons students to experience the enchanted land of Narnia as they learn to write with Structure and Style. *Students will need to have copies of the three novels mentioned above. **Charter funds may not be used to pay for this course.
Prerequisite: completion of at least one year (two years preferred) of a junior high level IEW curriculum and the ability to key word outline without assistance
Essay and Research Intensive
12-12:55pm Tuesdays (LIVE online Pacific Standard Time)
8th grade – 10th grade $225 per semester
Looking to bridge the gap between years of IEW writing and a high school level literature and composition course? Interested in an in-depth application of IEW’s structure and style? This year-long course will incorporate two of IEW’s advanced writing programs: “The Elegant Essay” and “Writing Research Papers.” We will begin the year with an intensive essay writing study of thesis statements, essay organization, transitions, introductions, and conclusions with practice in both descriptive and persuasive essay writing. The class will then transition into research paper writing where students will learn and practice conducting research, managing note-taking, and crafting two well-organized and complete research reports. NOTE: “Writing Research Papers” has been taken out of print so here will be additional material printing required for this class in lieu of purchasing a second book.
Prerequisite: completion of at least two years of junior high level IEW curriculum (for 8th graders) and/or high school student prepared for the rigor and responsibility of a high school level course
Advanced U.S. History-Based Writing
12-1:15pm Wednesdays (LIVE online Pacific Standard Time)
9th grade – 12th grade $315 per semester
This class follows the course of U.S. history from Explorers to Modern Times. Early lessons review and refine the IEW models of structure and elements of style. Subsequent lessons relax the style checklist and focus on more advanced style and essay models for college preparation. Essay models taught include the following:
- Argumentative/Persuasive Essays
- Personal Essays
- Narrative/Descriptive Essays
- Research Essays
- Literary Analysis Essays for three novels (Uncle Tom’s Cabin, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Old Man and the Sea) *Students will need copies of these novels
Prerequisite: completion of at least two years of junior high level IEW curriculum and the desire/ability to participate in a rigorous and challenging high school level course
Fix It! Grammar: Level 1 "The Nose Tree"
9-9:55am Mondays (LIVE online Pacific Standard Time)
3rd grade – 5th grade $195 per semester
Fix it! Grammar teaches grammar by allowing students to hunt for and correct errors in weekly passages that cumulatively tell a story (“The Nose Tree”). Level 1 is the first class of a six-year incremental program. This class will introduce and model grammar concepts, allow students to practice and master these concepts, and aid in the transfer of grammar skills into writing. Vocabulary lessons are also included. This class is recommended as an add-on course for students already enrolled in an IEW writing course.
Fix It! Grammar: Level 2 "Town Mouse and Country Mouse"
