Bio

Alison Maitlen was born and raised in Orange County, CA and graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor degree in Psychology before earning her Masters degree from CSUSB.  She spent a decade assisting large urban school districts with human resources, training and organizational development before leaving the workplace to be a full-time mom and then homeschooler.  Teaching and training have always been passions of hers, so she spent time substitute teaching at the junior high and high school levels and also guest speaking at state-level conferences and regional trainings.  After teaching writing to her own children using the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) curriculum, she began sharing with other families the profound impact that IEW can make in a student’s writing experience.  Alison is a Registered Instructor with IEW and appreciates the organization’s focus on quality in writing as opposed to quantity.  She has seen first hand the difference that this type of program can have on a child’s confidence and enjoyment in writing, and looks forward to bringing her classes live online directly to her students this year through HomeGrown Writers.
